Kicking Off the New School Year with Service!

Posted on Updated on

For our first service events of the year, we returned to some of our favorite projects from the past! First was cooking meals at the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor. Everybody always loves this fulfilling project, and we do it several times each year! Here’s how our Club Treasurer, Savanna Power, described the day:

“This Wednesday, September 24, 2014, several members of the UMaine Circle K International volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, a very welcoming house that provides accommodation for families who are receiving medical care from nearby facilities. To provide volunteer service, the members of Circle K made dinner for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. Working together, we made chicken alfredo with garlic bread. This volunteer opportunity allowed the members of Circle K to engage with each other and get to know each other more, especially the newer members, while also providing a service for the Ronald McDonald House and the families staying there. After we made the meal, we received a tour of the building and got to learn more about the Ronald McDonald House. As we left, some of the families staying at the house were able to thank us personally and tell us how the Ronald McDonald House has helped them and how much they appreciated us coming to volunteer. Hearing this from the families who directly benefit from our volunteer services was really rewarding and volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House gave Circle K a fulfilling service experience and a great opportunity to strengthen the relationships within the club.”

We also were the sponsoring student organization for this year’s Black Bear Attack, a mud/obstacle run held on campus! Members volunteered their time to keep runners on the right course and cheer them on to the finish!

This past week, we also collected donations for the Bangor Humane Society to benefit animals in the shelter. We’ve been busy with service and we won’t be slowing down any time soon!

Club Bonding With New and Returning Members!

Posted on Updated on

At the start of the year we like to do a few social activities together to help strengthen our club. It’s a really great way to make new members feel comfortable and to encourage friendships! Our first activity was candle-pin bowling in Old Town. We had a blast, but I don’t think we’ll be starting a Circle K bowling team any time soon!

We also did our annual apple-picking at Treworgy Family Orchards, which is always a great time! We picked some delicious apples for our caramel apple fundraiser and got to sample some tasty apple cider. It’s going to be a great year of service!

The Closing of a Successful Year!

To say that the past year was amazing would be a complete understatement. The University of Maine Circle K has come so far in the past year and there is no better way to end the year than to be recognized by Circle K International at the International Convention which took place beginning June 17-22 in Nashville, TN. Hundreds of Circle K members cleaned up parks, planted trees, packed medical supplies, cleaned rivers, and so much more throughout Nashville as part of the Large Scale Service Project. Afterwords members attended workshops, dances, team builders to grow as leaders and learn more about CKI. To top it all off, Circle K International Recognized all clubs and districts for their hard work this past year and that is where the University of Maine Circle K club received not one, but two awards! We were recognized with the first place award for the Best Website and were also Recognized with the 3rd place award for Overall Club Achievement! Way to go! The New England District was recognized with Distinguished District, Distinguished Editor and a Mile Award! Way to go UMaine and New England on a very wonderful year of service and here’s to an even more successful one!!

Another Successful Maine Day

The University of Maine Circle K club had on of their most successful Maine Days ever! Club members began by participating in the morning of service projects by volunteering for the University by washing University vehicles from the Education Department and Motor Pool. We we very honored and lucky to have been joined by Current District Governor Rachel Shanely, Immediate Past District Governor Katie Pappas, and Past Governor Tyler Foote, all of whom helped out with washing cars!

Afterwards UMaine Circle K members raced to the Steam Plant Parking lot to help put on one of the most successful St. Baldrick’s on Maine Day head shaving events yet! As of now we have raised over $14,000 to go towards pediatric Cancer Research with over 100 heads shaved! The crowd was very enthusiastic and many people cheered on all of the shavees throughout the entirety of the event.
